Wax Fruit (courtesy of the Frank A. Lee Library, NYS Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva, New York)

T

he original display of this exhibit at Mann Library included a number of wax fruit pieces from a collection at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. Over 200 models were made between 1920 and 1935 by James Lawson or between 1936 and 1942 by Clara Barnes. These fruits, vegetables and mushrooms were created for teaching purposes, many illustrating damage caused by various insects and diseases. Painstaking attention to minute detail and color has resulted in remarkably accurate sculptures. Reportedly, James Lawson plucked hair from his forearms and cut them to the proper length to make the barely visible bristles on a raspberry.
