Out of the Teeming Sea

Opisthobranchia of Sagami Bay, collected by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan by Kikutaro Baba, Tokyo, 1949

Emperor Hirohito, a serious biologist and owner of Japan's greatest shell collection, collected marine organisms whenever he stayed in his villa on Sagami Bay, not far from Tokyo. Because of its depth and the seasonal influence of warmth from the Japan Current, the bay abounds in a rich assortment of marine life, many transported from southern seas by the current.

After collecting specimens, Hirohito had two artists from His Majesty's Biological Laboratory paint them while their colors and details were still fresh, providing far better documentation than could the color photography of that time.
