Harvest of Freedom: The History of Kitchen Gardens in America

Aggeler & Musser Seed Company, Los Angeles, California, 1919

Aggeler & Musser titled this cover photo "The Heroine." A short description continues: "The Women's Land Army of America is a patriotic organization with offices (in)…Los Angeles. Of the 800 women sent out to work for farmers and growers 95% have made good. The Women's Land Army is here to stay."

That may have been an exaggeration but this World War I organization was the model for a federal program funded in 1943 during World War II that recruited, trained and placed more than a million women farm workers.
