In a more rural America, even families not connected directly to agriculture often kept a milk cow and a small flock of chickens for fresh eggs. To accommodate these households, as well as their farming customers, larger seed merchants offered far more than seeds. In addition to dogs, Burpee's also offered a variety of sheep, hogs, poultry, and farm machinery shipped out by train to rural and suburban stations throughout the country.
