Edible & Poisonous

O

f all the fungi, mushrooms are held in the highest esteem. They are highly visible and more important, many are delicious. Many are also poisonous. In eastern Europe, France and Italy, where mushroom gathering was a traditional event, valuable knowledge regarding identification and location was passed from generation to generation. Since a mistake could prove fatal, this information was extremely important. Lacking this tradition, in England during the latter half of the 19th century, mycologists published a number of popular guides to aid amateurs in identifying edible and poisonous mushrooms.
