I

n its infancy, the scientific study of fungi had to overcome a history of connections with the devil, demons, black magic, and death by poisonings. Later problems with classification led to confusion and difficulty. Four ground-breaking scientists--C.H. Persoon, Elias Fries, A.K.J. Corda, and Miles J. Berkeley--did significant work in mycology, and with their painstaking work in collecting and classifying, built a foundation for further discoveries in this field.
