New Deal and WWII
Government initiatives have had a great influence on prefabs. During the Depression, with large numbers of unemployed and homeless, prefabricated housing was the focus of tremendous interest as an answer to the desperate need for quickly built, inexpensive housing. With the build-up of the defense industry prior to and during World War II, the government needed to house thousands of defense workers with speed and economy. To do this, they purchased factory-built house trailers, which were transported and installed at sites near defense industries.
