Studying and imitating mayflies is at the heart and soul of fly-fishing.

Tom Fuller, The Complete Guide to Eastern Hatches, 2006

Mayflies are aquatic insects which belong to the Order Ephemeroptera (from the Greek ephemeros, "short-lived," and pteron "wing," referring to the brief lifespan of adults). The mayflies, in all stages of their metamorphosis, are a key food source for trout, and have inspired the design of countless artificial flies.
